ESC Volunteering for the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen

***call closed***Are you interested in creating a project to interconnect two partner cities? Do you enjoy working self-sufficiently and want to learn more about the political education inside a state parliament or the international administration of a city?

If the answer to both is “Yes”, then this opportunity is your chance – come to Bremen and support the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen in its activities!

Work for the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen.  Your hosting organisation may be the State Parliament or the Town Hall/Senate Chancellery

The Bremen Parliament is the state parliament of the city-state of Bremen. As the Department for Public Relations/International Affairs, they are responsible for political education. They try to get young people interested in parliament and democratic processes with their own concept (“Klasse Bürgerschaft”). Reconciliation and raising awareness of history is also an important element of the Parliament’s commemorative work.

As a volunteer in the Parliament you will have an opportunity to:

  • Learn more about public relations and international affairs inside of the state parliament of Bremen.
  • Reach new target groups through social media or help increase the visibility of the international work in Bremen.
  • Develop your own guided tour of the parliament in your native language and support delegation trips.
  • Support existing workshops for school classes and initiate exchanges between Bremen schools and the partner cities.
  • Support for the activities of the Bürgerschaftskanzlei in regards of National German Unity Day (3rd October)
  • Requirement: Since you will support workshops for German school classes and work with parliamentary materials, good German skills (A2/B1 or more) are a significant advantage for this position.

2. Senatskanzlei (Town Hall)

The Department of International Relations and Development Cooperation of the Town Hall is responsible for city partnerships, international networks and development cooperation. The department supports a broad network of non-governmental organisations, civil society initiatives, cultural institutions, schools, and companies. Important themes include sustainable development goals, joint remembrance, and youth empowerment.

As a volunteer in the Town Hall you will have an opportunity to:

  • Work together with actors in youth work, youth groups and schools from Bremen and the partner cities.
  • Get to know the administrative apparatus of Bremen and take part in (international) events.
  • Initiate and support youth exchanges and partner city activities.
  • Help to address younger target groups to educate about the concept of town twinning and get involved in various social media activities.
  • Requirement: For this position, English (B2 or more) is the primary requirement. A basic knowledge of German is desirable.

Shared Opportunities for Both Positions

Regardless of where you are placed, you will:

  • Contribute to strengthening ties between sister cities with your own project ideas (e.g. for events, exhibitions and/or on the topics of youth).
  • Apply with your own project and implement it during your volunteering.
  • Develop projects with the other volunteer from the partner cities coordinated by the Bremische Bürgerschaft or the Senatskanzlei, just across the street.
