Volunteering Experience in an Atelier with Children
My volunteering experience in Germany has been one of the most meaningful periods of my life. Working in an atelier with children gave me the chance to step into a completely new environment where creativity, patience, and communication played an important role every day.
In the atelier, children were encouraged to express themselves through drawing, painting, and different craft activities. My role was to support them during these workshops, help prepare materials, and guide them when they needed help. I also tried to motivate them to trust their ideas and enjoy the creative process rather than focusing only on the result. Very quickly, I realized that even small encouragement could make a big difference in a child’s confidence.
What I enjoyed most was the connection I built with the children. Every child had their own personality and way of expressing creativity, and it was interesting to observe how differently they approached the same task. This taught me to be more patient and understanding, and to always adapt my approach depending on the child.
Working with other volunteers and coordinators was also an important part of my experience. We planned activities together, shared ideas, and supported each other during busy moments. This teamwork helped me feel more confident and also showed me how much smoother things can run when people work together with a shared goal.
At times, the work was challenging, especially when managing groups of active children or solving unexpected situations. However, these moments helped me grow. I became more responsible, more flexible, and more comfortable taking initiative without waiting for instructions.
Looking back, this experience was not only about volunteering, but also about personal growth. I am leaving this project with new skills, warmer memories, and a deeper understanding of how important creativity and care are in a child’s development. I am truly grateful for this opportunity, and I know it will stay with me for a long time.
Looking back, I realize that every step I took shaped the path I am still walking, and I believe the future holds even more opportunities for growth and discovery.
Nuray is hosted by Kultur vor Ort e.V. on our project financed by the European Solidarity Corps and Jugend für Europa.
