New Horizons, New Faces, and Early Summer Vibes
Time is speeding up, and I can hardly believe how much has happened since my last update. Every week brings new experiences, new people, and new memories, all adding depth and color to my journey here in İzmir. As the days grow longer and the sun shines brighter, I find myself soaking up every moment more consciously, knowing how fast this experience is moving.
A recent highlight was a trip to Samsun and the Black Sea region, a part of Türkiye I had yet to explore. The contrast with the Aegean coast was striking lush green hills, misty landscapes, and a cooler, more humid atmosphere gave the area a unique charm. Walking along the Black Sea’s wild beaches and discovering Samsun’s history and coastal culture felt like entering a different world. I was especially touched by the hospitality of the people we met along the way. There’s something so grounding about being welcomed with open arms in a completely new environment it reminds me of the beauty of human connection beyond language and background.
Back in İzmir, the first beach days of the year have finally arrived, bringing a wave of joy and relaxation. Whether it’s a spontaneous afternoon in Urla or a peaceful swim in Foça, these little escapes to the sea have become a perfect way to unwind after intense workshop days. The Aegean breeze, the salty air, and the warm sand are all gentle reminders of how lucky I am to be living so close to such natural beauty.
Speaking of workshops, this past month has been incredibly rewarding. Not only have I continued my work with passionate students, but I’ve also had the chance to meet new local people through outreach projects and collaboration with municipalities. These encounters have added a new dimension to my volunteering experience listening to their stories, exchanging perspectives, and even sharing laughs has helped me feel even more integrated into the community.
One moment that really touched me was when a few students told me they had gotten the best grades in their class thanks to what they learned in our workshops. Their proud smiles and words of gratitude made me realize how meaningful this project truly is. It’s in those little victories that I find purpose and energy knowing that the time and effort we put in can empower young people and boost their confidence.
Of course, not everything is easy. One of the more emotional parts of this journey has been saying goodbye to friends who have completed their projects and are returning home. These farewells are bittersweet filled with gratitude for the memories we’ve shared and the bonds we’ve formed. From deep conversations on the balcony to shared dinners, spontaneous dance nights, and inside jokes only we understand, these friendships have left a lasting mark. Even though we’re parting ways, I know we’ll carry a part of this experience with us wherever we go, and I’m hopeful that our paths will cross again in the future.
As I write these lines, I’m once again struck by how quickly everything is unfolding. The days seem to blur into one another, and yet each one brings something new to cherish. Whether it’s the laughter of students, the sparkle of the sea, or a meaningful conversation with a stranger, every moment counts.
This experience continues to shape me in ways I hadn’t imagined and as summer begins to blossom over İzmir, I’m filled with gratitude and anticipation for what’s still to come.
If you’re thinking of taking a leap into volunteering, I can only say this : do it. Time will fly, but the memories and the growth will stay with you forever.
