ESC with Jokes die Zirkusschule e.V. – “Achiece Recognition Through Social Media”

Did you ever dream about becoming a part of a circus? This ESC gives you the opportunity to do just that! For 11 months, you can support the courses for children at Jokes die Zirkusschule e.V. in Bremen, Germany, raise awareness for their activities through social media and learn a lot about youth work!

Dates: October 2020 – September 2021

Location: Bremen, Germany

About the background of the project

As part of the project “ARTS – Achieve Recognition Through Social Media”, NaturKultur e.V. will invite 5 young people to volunteer at 5 different institutions in Bremen. In Bremen there are a great many inspirational NGOs that do amazing work for the local community. Unfortunately these acts of solidarity are not always recognised to the degree that they perhaps deserve by the wider population, due to lack of social media presence. This project hopes to set about solving this problem by introducing young passionate volunteers into the teams of these NGOs so they can help build up their social media pages and get more recognition, and not only that, but also inspire more people to act in solidarity. Furthermore, the volunteers join the day-to-day work of the organisations, providing help for their activities and learning along the way.

The European Solidarity Corps finances this project and wants to bring people from different backgrounds together to form a society based on mutual acceptance, solidarity and cohesion.

This voluntary service will be hosted by Jokes die Zirkusschule e.V. for 1 volunteer!

About the hosting organization

Jokes die Circusschule e.V. was founded in 1998 and is a registered non-profit organisation since 2002. The organisation works primarily with children and young people, who are living in Huckelriede (Bremen), an area of town with an increased need for support. The organisation is a recognised organisation in the child and youth services, and receives funding from the social services (public child and youth services of Huckelriede), as well as financial support for educational purposes for the provision of education in schools across different parts of town.  Since 2014, the Circusschule organises pedagogical circus activities and projects within the programme “Kultur macht stark”.

Recently, the circus received its own tent! You can watch a report in the local news about this exciting change here.

Your tasks as a volunteer would include…

  • Helping out in a variety of circus courses for children (age 4-14) in schools and in the circus tent
  • Helping with the maintenance of the circus tent and area around it, the materials and the grounds (including a garden)
  • Taking photos and videos during events and activities and establishing social media platforms to show the activities to other people in Bremen and beyond
  • Supporting the planning and implementation of a youth exchange with circus methods that will take place in the summer of 2021 – this includes communicating with partner organisations abroad, planning the programme, the logistics, preparing materials etc.
  • Coming up with your own ideas for small projects and activities within the circus

You do not need to have prior experience in social media and/or circus skills, as you will learn as you go along. In the first weeks of your voluntary service, you will receive basic training in social media management through NaturKultur e.V., and you will always work alongside employees of Jokes die Zircusschule e.V. in their circus courses.
